Back to South Africa, we here welcomed, already at the Johannesburg airport, from our friends Xande and Tiane!! (Nothing better then meet with friends at the arrival gate!!).
Not only they let us mess up with their entire house, they also took us around the city and to some tourist spots in the area, including a lion park (where we could play and cuddle with some baby lion and baby tiger and even watch a hippo playing with ball), and the Sterkfontein, an archeological site where a important fossil where found, connecting even more the modern humans to the primates. The place is known as The Cradle of Humankind and the fossils are still been removed and the forecast is that the work will be done by 2010 (in time for the World Cup, of course!!!).
From Jo’burg, we drove ourselves to our main safari in Africa: The Kruger National Park. One of the main attractions in South Africa, this park is near the border with Mozambique, has over 22000 sqkm and hosts a broad variety of animals and vegetation.
We spent 3 days driving inside the park, giving time enough to get to know only ¼ of the total accessible area. Even though, we could see most of the big mammals, including the missing 4 of the "Big Five": Buffalo, Elephant, Rhino and the most difficult one: the Leopard. The Lion also belong to this list, but we only saw it in Namibia and the rhino we saw over there were too far to take any picture with the digital camera.
One of the best part in our trip to the Kruger was seen the hippos at the lake (around 15 of them together). This was definitely a unique view. In the picture below, they are clustered in the left side, behind the dry brunch.

Back from Jo’burg, we spent our last weekend with Tiane and Xande, and we also visited the Apartheid Museum. There was also time for a BBQ, to have some small filling from home!!!
